For those of you who know many of the covers of the Twilight saga have a meaning. Twilight is a reference to the forbidden fruit. New Moon could be a reference to when Bella is attacked by Jasper, Eclipse is how Bella is unable to fully cut herself off from her human life, Breaking Dawn is about Bella going from the pawn who is the weakest chess piece to the queen, the Short Second Life of Bree Tanner is about Bree's tragically short life as a newborn and the official guide helps us fill in pieces of info never revealed in the main series.

With the wait finally over we get to see the cover for Midnight Sun, the cover depicts a pomegranate cut open to reveal its insides. So what does this mean? What is the symbolism and how does it relate to the story?

The Pomegranate holds meaning in many cultures. Some believe it was a pomegranate not an apple from the forbidden tree in Eden. But there is another story which anyone familiar with Greek mythology can appreciate how it ties into the symbolism of forbidden fruits.

According to legend, the god of the underworld Hades fell in love with Persephone, daughter of Demeter, the goddess of the harvest. Hades abducts Persephone and in her despair, the earth stops producing crops and people begin to starve. Zeus eventually orders Hades to release Persephone but Hades gives her a pomegranate and she eats some of the seeds. Since she ate fruit from the underworld she should remain in the underworld but instead, she spends a third of the year in the underworld (the winter months) and the rest of the year with the gods.

Edward being Hades and Bella Persephone is the most obvious meaning. By eating the pomegranate Bella ties herself to the underworld-the vampire life-for all time.

Now you may think Edward fits the role of Hades and Bella is Persephone. Edward being an undead vampire and Bella a mortal human. But what if it is a little more complex? What is Edward is Persephone and Bella the pomegranate? As a vampire Edward certainly fits the role of a god and Bella as his natural food source is the fruit, but add the fact she is his singer and he is a veggie vampire Bella also fits the role of forbidden fruit.

What do you guys think? Did you get the Greek reference right away? Is Edward Hades or is he Persephone?
